COVID-19 Updates

Urbandale Health Care Center is 100 percent committed to keeping all of our residents, families and team members safe and maintaining a high standard of care for our residents.  We are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation, and we are following all policies and practices as set by state and federal officials.

It is our desire to communicate with the Urbandale Health Care community regularly and in real-time as we continue to live out our mission of care, compassion and quality of life for all residents.  We hope this transparency provides comfort.

April 22, 2021

As of April 22, we have no new changes since our last update. The one resident who has tested positive for COVID-19 in our facility is recovering well and moving to our “well” unit on Saturday, April 24th.

We are in contact with the Polk County Health Department and the Iowa Department of Public Health daily. We are continuing to follow all CMS guidelines including requiring PPE, screening all employees daily for COVID symptoms and limiting visitation during an outbreak. All residents are being tested 3x per week and staff members who are not vaccinated are tested twice per week for COVID-19.

We continue to highly encourage our residents and staff to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Good news, we will be able to schedule in-door and out-doors visits starting Wednesday, April 28th. Due to the status of COVID-19 in our facility, we do only allow compassionate care visits currently. We know it is hard to be distant from family, but we thank you for your kindness and patience as we work to protect our residents and staff and the community. If you need a compassionate care visit, please call the front desk at 515-270-6838 to schedule a time.

In the meantime, if you would like to schedule a virtual visit with your loved one, please call Mike Hoffman at 515-270-6838 Monday–Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Thank you for your unwavering support and patience!

– Bethany Lee, Administrator

April 20, 2021

As of April 20, we have one resident who has tested positive for COVID-19 in our facility. That resident is receiving dedicated care in our COVID-19 unit.

We are in communication with the Polk County Health Department and the Iowa Department of Public Health to ensure our residents’ and staffs’ protection. We are continuing to follow CMS guidelines, requiring PPE and visitation restrictions during an outbreak. All residents and staff members are tested twice per week for COVID-19. This may cause reporting and case numbers to change frequently.

We continue to encourage our residents and staff to get vaccinated.

Thank you for your patience as we work hard to protect the health and wellbeing of our residents and staff. Your support means more than we can express.

April 12, 2021

As of April 12, we have zero active cases of COVID-19 in our facility. Residents and staff were tested today, and those tests came back negative. We are happy to be closing our COVID-19 Positive Unit.

We will remain in communication with the Polk County Health Department and the Iowa Department of Public Health to ensure our residents’ and staffs’ continued protection.

We continue to encourage residents and staff to get vaccinated.

Thank you for your continued support as we fought hard to protect our residents and staff amid the outbreak. We will continue to take protective measures for the well-being of residents, staff and the surrounding community.

April 9, 2021

As of April 9, 2021, we have four residents and 10 staff who have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health & Polk County Health, a variant strain of COVID-19 has been detected at Urbandale Health Care Center. It is the predominant strain currently found in Iowa, and it is not more harmful than the original strain. However, it is more easily spread.

We are in communication with the Polk County Health Department and the Iowa Department of Public Health daily to ensure our residents’ and staffs’ protection. We are continuing to follow CMS guidelines, requiring PPE and visitation restrictions during an outbreak. All residents and staff members are tested twice per week for COVID-19, which is why you may notice that reporting and case numbers change frequently.

The last positive test result in the facility was on April 2, and we are on track to close our Covid Positive Unit soon as long as there isn’t another positive test.

Currently, we are above the national average with 44% of our employees vaccinated. While we cannot require vaccinations, we continue to encourage residents and staff to get vaccinated. We are uplifted seeing so many of our employees lead by example and encourage their peers to get vaccinated.

As we work hard to protect our residents and staff, we want to say thank you to our community. Your donations, calls and kind words lift our spirits and give us endurance in this trying and difficult year.

April 5, 2021

As of April 5, 2021, we have had 18 residents and 10 staff who have tested positive for COVID-19.

We are continuing to follow CMS guidelines, requiring PPE and visitation restrictions during an outbreak. We test all residents and staff members twice per week for COVID-19, which is why you may notice that reporting and case numbers change frequently.

Following the 10-day quarantine period for positive tests, we will be able to release several residents who previously tested positive from quarantine this week.

The health and safety of our residents and employees remains our top priority. Our leadership team is in frequent contact with the County Health Department, our medical director, other local physicians and the local hospital systems to ensure we are taking all necessary precautions.

Finally, this has been a trying and difficult year for our employees, residents and their families and we want to thank our community for their support throughout. The uplifting messages, generous donations and calls keep our employees and residents in high spirits. We will continue to do all we can to keep our residents and employees safe and healthy.
